if you're going to remove the ceiling yourself make sure you find out if it's asbestos first. if it's an older house it's very possible it contains asbestos and may even have lead paint. but the paperwork in your contract should identify if either of those are in your house. a simple dust mask isn't enough to protect you from asbestos exposure. be careful when remodeling an older home.

Existence of lead-based paint or asbestos probably is not clarified in contract paperwork.

Few owners know if either material was used in their home, and ergo are unable to accurately disclose.
Discovery of presence of lead-based paint or asbestos are up to the buyer during the inspection/investigation period.
