We have had some odoriforous ants outside our house in Pennyslvania. We burn them with a torch and they release a stong citrenella smell. Evidently they aren't harmful but they are pretty unappealing! We had Kil-mor inspect our house in Chapel Hill. The owner was extremely knowledgeable and I'd recommend him.
I have lived at my current residence (apartment) for about 18mths. Never really had much of a ant problem. Occassionally out on the sidewalk cracks, on the porch (because of a crack), rarely I saw a few in one of the bathrooms, and if the trash in the kitchen was full and not emptied over night, in the morning I would see some. I was never concerned and just tried to keep everything cleaned up.
Then about 2 weeks ago, I woke up to tons of flying ants all over my kitchen floor. I have been have problems with them ever since. They go away for a day or two and then come back. Orkin has been out and I called the apartment complex. I even tried a few home remedies for ants. Nothing has worked. I am freaked out and ready to soon move because of this. It is too gross. I now find them at my back door, occassionally flying around near lights and even found some in one of the bedrooms.
We suddenly had a ant problem in the bathrooms too. I have been keeping this place mega clean and there is no reason for this problem.
I read somewhere that ants first build up their worker ant population and only when it is really big, do they start on build on reproduction (ie: queen ants). They said a sign of quuen / flying ants, is a sign that there is an enmorous ant problem somewhere in, under or outside of your house somewhere. They said the best treatment is to treat for worker ant colony and not the flying ants.
I've had a few in my tub, too. Usually there are one or two in there when I go to shower in the morning and I drown them (sorry little guys). They don't seem to put much use to those wings.
I can tell you from personal experience that you might. This time of year they are busy as hell.
