I finally found myself downtown at lunchtime with DH who has turned vegetarian...which is a bit limiting and we decided to go to Irregardless Cafe.

OMG. What fabulous food. I had their outstanding butternut squash soup (which, being southern had sugar in it which took a few bites to adjust to...) and their grilled veggie sandwich. WOW. which I had gotten a whole sandwich instead of a half.

DH was very pleased with his veggie burger and it kept him full ALL AFTERNOON.

A real find and I can't believe I hadn't gotten there before now.

Yup - It's a great spot. They also have live music quite often. I don't eat there as often as I would like.

It's always been wonderful. We decided to go there for Thanksgiving dinner this year!

Irregardless has been a local gem for 35 years, I think. I believe it was vegetarian-only when it opened, and this was back when Raleigh's restaurant scene was much more "Southern" than you find now (i.e., "What's a vegetarian?"). They were also the first restaurant in the area to go smoke-free, way before the laws. They used to regularly win the "best wait staff in the Triangle", and their Lemon Tahini salad dressing was (is) legendary.

Mmm, think it's time to make a reservation.....

While you're downtown with your vegetarian friend, also check out the Remedy Diner!

Regardless of its name, it has a good reputation for quality food.

Concur in all comments. It's a great (and quite rare) accomplishment for Arthur Gordon to have maintained a record of consistent success for so long.

Years ago I actually catered an event he was attending...I was so freaked out and intimidated! His food has always been spectacular and he was considered one of the Triangle's top chefs! (He was super nice though :-))

I am just kicking myself for waiting so long to avail myself of this fab. restaurant.

We don't eat out that much, so when we do, we tend to go to the 'new' restaurants that folks are talking about.

What are some more fab restaurants (for lunch) that I have been missing???

I have to say, I like lunch b/c it is a bit less expensive for some of these places & I can tie it into work travels or errands on a day off!
