We are near Sunset Lake and Holly Springs Rds and are faced with the same dilemma driving to and from New York (seemingly monthly). Maybe that's why so many New Yorkers move to Wake Forest.
We take 401 - 40 - 64 - 95 and find this to be the quickest in peak times as it pretty much avoids all potential traffic hazards. But I agree, 85 is a much more pleasant drive. Maybe we will give Mike's Creedmoor Rd tip a try if we are not driving in shopping hours.
When 540 is completed in about 10 years, we are all set!
Now, if I could just figure out a good way through DC...

Try 301 N (around Fort AP Hill north of Richmond). You can bypass DC altogether. You can reach highway speeds in VA and when you reach MD you will encounter some lights in some of the towns. From 301 N take 97N to 895N/ I-95 N through Baltimore. It ends of adding about 30 min. onto the commute, but when it comes to DC traffic, I'll gladly add 30 min. to avoid hours of gridlock. I've lived in the DC/Baltimore area most of my life and now commute back and forth monthly (at least). It has kept us sane on the long commutes north.
We were coming from North Cary, but we always took 40 to Miami Blvd to 70 (towards Durham) and then got on 85.
It's the same principle as what PDXMom suggests, but doesn't take you nearly as far west.
You're on the money, this is exactly what we do .. we're in W. Cary (55/High House area) - 55 to NC540 to I40W, 1 exit to Miami Blvd, right on Miami, to 70, to I85N. Off hours (e.g. late PM / early AM) we normally hit 2-3 lights max before I85.
