I have family in town this week from New York and I'd like to show them a good time on memorial day. What is the best place to have a picnic? I am looking for open area for the kids to run, playground for toddlers, and lots of shade because I know that is going to going to be hot this memorial day. I was thinking Jordan Lake but I don't know of any playground there. There are 5 separate areas and I have no idea which one would be the best.

Also, for those of you who picnic on holidays like memorial day, how early should I get there to get a good spot. I'd don't want to get there too early, but also don't want to miss our on a good spot.

Thanks!

Jordan Lake is going to be mobbed on Memorial Day. Guaranteed. It always is, and it will probably be worse this year.

I'd recommend taking bubbles/frisbee's for the kids and going to Duke Garden's. It's absolutely beautiful there and there is a huge wide open area for the kids to just run and play while you adults sit on a blanket and chat and soak in the beauty.

Bond Park has a nice & shady picnic area near the Boat House. The playground is just a short walk away, but is not within eye sight. I have no experience with a crowd on Memorial Day tho.
