People are not selling to buy because replacement homes are too expensive. What happened during the last bubble?

I'm getting ready to sell and downsize. I guess I have to live somewhere. As far as replacement homes being too expensive? Maybe so, but what am I supposed to do about it? I suppose I'll still buy something. Or maybe two or three. Live in one and rent the others out. I'm just one person, so I don't need anything grandiose. Even a 1000 sq ft condo might work.
