Hi everyone, can we, as professionals, refer to agents as Real Estate Agents (REA) and not as Realtors? Unless we specifically mean the term Realtor? I think it is less confusing to the public if we maintain that difference? What do you think?

Hi Shelly,
Interesting point...in my area the vast majority are "Realtors"..so use of the term is not given a second thought. What's it like in your area...and others?....Sunny
Almost everyone here in Columbia is a Realtor, and the public at large seems to call us Realtors more than real estate agents. So, I almost always use the term Realtor, but I do explain the difference.
The term realtor is trademarked. If you are a member of a Board then you are a realtor.
To be perfectly legal, it should always be used thus: REALTOR®, all caps, with the symbol. (It's registered, not trademarked.) Which I think looks pretty dumb, frankly (the all caps part), but that's how we're supposed to use it.
As for influencing how the public uses it, good luck!
A REALTOR® can also be referred to as a real estate agent.

I'm just suggesting that we, as professionals, should use the correct term. then the public may begin to follow our suit. But when we don't even use it correctly....
It is like calling all copiers XEROX machines. they are not. that is a type of copier. The correct term is copy machine....

Or like down in Houston...all sodas are called "Coke"...lol...
Sunny
Heck, soft drinks are called "Coke" all across Texas, in my experience. And have been for as long as I can remember (which is a disturbingly long time ).
When responding to a question by the public on this forum I tend to refer to the individual that they are referring to as licensee or real estate sales person. I do this primarily because I don't know if they are actually dealing with a Realtor.
