Our house is currently under new construction. The standard package from our builder included a 8x10 patio off the back of the house. Originally we debated having no back patio at all because I wanted pavers and my DH hates pavers and he wanted a smooth surface. I agreed to the concrete, planning to stain it later.

We contracted to upgrade the standard concrete patio to an extra large 10x32 patio for an extra $800. They poured it wrong as 8x32 and didn't even notice until I pointed it out. I insisted they fix it. The fix they came up with was to simply pour an extra 2x32 strip. It looks terrible with a long seam joint doing exactly what my DH hates about pavers. I'm also concerned it will eventually crack and break away since it was not dug down like the rest of the patio. Cracks are why I don't like concrete patios and you never know when or if it will even happen.

The only reasonable fixes we can come up with are to break it all up and re-pour it again or overlay it with pavers. The pavers are what I originally wanted but will cost around $800 plus labor. Our closing is just a month away and I feel like the builder should fix it right or credit us for the mistake. What would you do?

The builder needs to break it apart and re-do it. Don't budge. They did a shabby job.

They made a mistake. See if you can just keep it at 8 x 32 and get your $800 upgrade fee back (they can demolish the 2 x 32 piece, as it likely looks strange anyway). Alternatively, see if you can keep it as is and get a credit back.

You have the right to (obviously) get a 10 x 32 patio (and not in the manner they did), but since that would cost the builder the most time & money (tear down & new pour), see if you can get something else instead that makes you happy.

I had the same issue. Standard concrete patio was 8x10 and I ordered it 12x10 with an optional screened porch installed over it. The patio was poured at 8x10 which I noticed before the screen porch was added. Builder said his mistake and he added 4x10 to correct.

Problem was that there was a "seam" at the addition point. I said I was not happy with a seam. He agreed so we agreed he would have the seam "filled" in. I suppose I could have busted chops and demand the whole thing be ripped up and repoured but I decided as I was going to have the floor tiled or epoxy painted, why argue over this as the problem would be gone and I wanted a "good relationship" with the builder for warranty purposes.

I ended up epoxy painting the floor. While I can see the "filled" in seam no one else sees it and the builder and I have a very good relationship to the point that some wonder how I got things done so fast.

I will gladly buy lunch, but you buy cocktails and dinner.......LOL
