Could I get advise on purchasing a fixer upper on the Fl west coast for a retirement home? Renting it in the meanwhile?

A little more information about where and what you are purchasing would get more feedback.

It is really about location. If you want a short term rental, then you have to be in a location that is ideal for travelers. Usually waterfront or very close to the beach or other attractions is ideal. Otherwise, you are better off with a long-term lease. Just keep in mind with short term rentals, you will have to advertise quite a bit to keep in booked unless you have a vacation rental company manage and market it for you. You will also have to pay to clean it between guests, etc. The nice thing about doing short term though is you could use it for yourself and other family members when vacationing. If you rent long-term, that will likely not happen.
