In my opinion I see both positives and negatives to gentrification to slum lords. Their property values might increase but it's unlikely yuppies would appreciate the decay and as a result they may become more likely to

I dint know if they hate it, I know I wouldn't. Granted I don't have a crapshack to rent. I would like the neighbors bringing up values because it usually means rent goes up too since the area becomes desirable
If nothing else, the new yuppie neighbors would start to complain to the city about the condition of the slumlord's property; forcing them to spend money on long overdue maintenance.
I woud think they would like it, but only if real estate flippers offered to buy them out at good prices. They can always move on to new areas where they can let the buildings deteriorate.
Back when I used to rent, I would fix everything myself and not call the landlord for anything. He never increased my rent. The lady across the hall paid $200 more per month, always going up and called the land lord for everything.
Sometimes it pays to keep your mouth shut and fix it yourself. The landlord will simply pass the cost along to you anyway through increased rent.
I don't know if they like it, but they sure make more money in rent off of it. Keep in mind, even if its the crummiest dwelling in the neighborhood, it will rent for a lot more in a nice neighborhood than the ghetto. Also, even in a crummy apartment, he will get a better class of renter. Lots of folks will tolerate an old and dilapitated place, but not a place where they worry about getting jumped. I'm one of those. My oven and range are push button, the Fridge is probably original, the windows aren't very insulative and don't work very well, but I pay $175 or more less in rent than anyone in my zip code.
