So I saw a building that is in the midst of being torn down and I thought to myself, "self those are some beautiful windows, it's a shame they are going to be destroyed."
Getting windows, doors and what have you from a building that is about to get demolished... is that a thing? If so how and who should be contacted to set it up?
At least here in the MidAtlantic there is a big market in windows, doors and trim from houses that are to be demolished. the 'parts' are in big demand by people restoring properties in Historic districts. These are generally early 20th century (or older buildings)
I don't know if this is true everywhere, but around here, the demolition contractor "owns" the building and all of its contents, once the contract has been awarded. If you talk to the property owner and they give you permission to take items from the building after the demo contractor has been hired, it could be like stealing from the contractor who adjusted their bid lower, thinking they will make some extra money from salvage. So, if you see equipment at the site, I'd talk to the demo contractor.

Same here in New Orleans. We have stores (some large) devoted solely to architectural salvage sales. There are many beautiful older items like that for sale but seldom cheap. There always have been. As you probably read in the news a few years back, looting of valuable and expensive architectural salvage items from damaged homes was a huge problem after the hurricane.
