We need a name for our new house. Our friends have offered to make a sign for our entry way as a house warming gift. As long as we're going to have a sign, we thought it would be even more fun with a name for the house.
But.... we can't come up with a name. I've put some possibilities below in blue, but none of them seem quite right. Any ideas?
Features of our house that might be good in a name:
1. House is on a hill, overlooking a wooded hollow. Fall leaves of all colors but mostly golden hues. Golden Leaf Hill is one idea we came up with. Or House of Leaves?
2. Lots of wildlife. We have deer, foxes, and all the typical woodland critters. Lots of Barred Owls. We're next to a house that's on a lake. So we regularly see loons, herons, swans, geese but it would not be fitting to use the word "lake". Thus, Heron Hollow might work but not Heron Lake. Since we have loons we toyed with the idea of Loony Bin, but husband thinks that's a little too cutesy.
3. House has an interesting fountain out front, and a nice garden. with a spectacular fig tree Another distinct feature is a blue garage. Casa Garaje Azul? (We like foreign languages, so it might be fun to have a name in another language but I don;t want it to sound affected, either.) Figgy's Kingdom? House of Many Flowers? Fountain House?
4. We bought this for our retirement. Work-No-More Cottage?
5. We bought the house because of the beautiful sunroom. Sun Spot? Sunnyside Up? Sunny Sanctuary?
Whatever you name it, don't make it something too "twee". You'll have to look at it for a long time and it will grate on you if it's not the "right" one. It's not an old house, right? Otherwise you could name it for the original owners or builders. I have a huge Southern Magnolia tree and 23 crape myrtles, so my house is unofficially named "Magnolia Myrtles". The historic name, though, is "Hayden House".
Of all the choices you listed, "Heron Hollow" is by far the most appealing IMHO.
At first I liked Heron Hollow, but rereading you are on a hill, not in the hollow. So how about Heron's Nest (cf. crow's nest). Gold Hill works, but only obvious in the fall. Golden Leaf is a tobacco name. Hill Hollow is an oxymoron unfortunately. Oh, how about Heron's Rest to give a nod to retirement. Fox Hill?
Ive lived in two houses with names. One was Hillock House and the other was Green Orchard. Both descriptive of where they were located, I suspect so the postman could find them.
