Really? Can anyone else report that appraisals are being done directly by lenders?

in 20 years, and especially for about 9 years (aka post-recession), I've never seen a purchase mortgage lender use any "in-house" appraiser.

Even for a refinance, they may get to choose from their favorite 3rd party appraisers, but it's not a bank employee.

I'm sure that banks have on-staff appraisers who help them work through delinquencies, short sales, foreclosures, etc.

But that was never the point of the thread or inquiry

Well, we had our offer accepted, and when I found the home inspector I wanted, it is 10 days out before they can come do it.

Just search for an inspector who can come out sooner if it causes difficulty for you. Shouldn't be too hard to find.
