It's something that will affect inner affluent suburbs of high COL areas. It almost seems like an initiative written with Arlington in mind (which wouldn't shock me given how many Democratic Party politicos live around here). There's been a long struggle here between established residents with SFHs trying to preserve their quiet residential neighborhoods and the county which is eager to ramp up density and get more mid and high rise development.

The county - whose administration is controlled to a North Korean level by Democrats - is paying a lot of lip service to affordable housing and equity etc. but anyone who knows Arlington knows that the newer dense developments tend to be 90+ % faux luxury 2-4k a month type places. In reality, the city leadership dreams of replicating the Ballston-Rosslyn corridor all over the county and complete the transformation of Arlington from quiet suburban mix (that it was up to the 60s/70s, but also still is in many parts outside the Metro stations' walking distance) to completely urbanized edge city with a powerhouse economic base.

It's an interesting situation because most of those folks with SFHs who hate this idea are of course also liberals (there's like 5 Republicans in the county). They just prefer their quaint suburban paradise over the big city.

They're trying to push the riff-raff out into MAGA country so that the ivory tower progressives will have the urban centers to themselves. You know those left wingers love minorities and immigrants until they actually have to interact with them...

That's a far cry from building a whole new apartment building in a neighborhood of single family dwellings, but could open up some more affordable housing in some areas.
This has actually been done in San Diego. Now, in some neighborhoods you can build 4 or even 6 Accessory Dwelling Units in the backyard of a single family house in a single family zone.

Good thing these aren't whole new apartment buildings /sarc (aimed at the duplicitous nature of our government).

Well, that many on one lot, and I would doubt if there is really enough parking and other infrastructure to support it without impacting the neighborhood.

I thought seperate entrances were considered shaming in many areas including NYC and high rise buildings.

Tent cities. Just move all the homeless to the california and arizona desert and put up big shade canopies and swamp coolers in the summer. Get rehab people out there to work with them and meds for the crazy ones. This could be done for a fraction of the cost of luxury apartments for homeless people which only take a few people off the streets.

Then the ones that can get their act together can be reunited with civilization.

Quartsite, AZ out in the desert attracts 200,000 people in the winter. There is slab city in California. It could most certainly be done.
