Just found the house of my dreams, really. The house is foreclosure, very good shape, affordable...the property taxes would EAT US ALIVE! This really stinks. We have looked at over 20 homes, and this is the one.

I wonder if I lowballed the bank to lower the payment enough to afford the property tax if they'd go for it. This is just absurd. Did I mention we love the house?

It's priced insanely low for a quick sale, but hasn't went under contract yet.

Just thinking how disappointed I'll be if this is the only thing holding us back...

It also wouldn't hurt to try and get an idea if there are any proposed tax increases coming along. Schools, local, county. Taxes won't ever go down, they'll only go up and perhaps at a time when you least need them to. I only mention this since you've mentioned them as a priority problem. Good luck!

Heh I know how you feel. I just moved from California to New york and some of the houses here have OUTRAGEOUS taxes. The one we are buying isn't too bad but $4900 in taxes compared to the 2000 we were paying back home is ouchie. Of course 'back home' we didn't have 26 acres of land either!

They might go by the sale price this year but what about subsequent years? If there is no sale on the house recently, they are going to go by comps to appraise your house for tax purposes (at least that is how they do it in TX). When the market is back up and your house appraises for a lot more, are you ready to pay the taxes then.
Good luck!

In CA our taxes were 1.25 percent of the SELLING price..I know it's a lot higher in many other states..

I think we forget to figure that in to our homebuying....it's really knocks the payment up...I need to keep that in mind..

Yes we are staying in GA, moving to another county closer to Atlanta. And we just sold in a county where I THOUGHT the taxes were already high....geez...what a killjoy! It has certainly rained on my parade LOL

That's another reason why we are not moving closer to DH's work. The property taxes two counties over from us are 3-5 times more than we pay now. It's ridiculous. A $6000 annual property tax adds $500 per month to your mortgage bill. Outrageous!

Well, on a good note, the electricity averages MUCH less than I anticipated. Even though it is a foreclosure, I was able to contact electric company that serviced address when it was occupied. Makes me feel a bit better...might be hope yet...LOL
