I have heard of them; was unaware there is a specific recipe- in my family it meant any unusal combination of things piled high between two slices of bread. My sister's wasn't all that extreme: lettuce, tomato, pickles, swiss cheese, beer salami, mustard, egg salad, pastrami, 1000 Island dressing on Russian black bread, not necessarily in that order.
My husband is likely to include cookies in his, but then he eats cake with his breakfast cereal. Yuck!

Reason: I forgot the mustard-lol
Okay, you piqued my curiosity and I had to check it out. I found these references and a recipe. The recipe is a good place to start, but in my opinion, it is not the only combination that qualifies as a Dagwood. From a lifetime of reading the Blondie comic strip, a Dagwood was anything leftover her husband could find in the refrigerator for his nightly midnight raid. Hope this helps.
Named after the husband in the Blondie comic strip, a Dagwood is a piled high combination of meats, cheeses, vegetables and "throw-ins" like leftover stuffing, mashed potatoes, or anything else that might take your fancy. Place it between thick slices of bread or your fav hoagie roll and wa la...a Dagwood sandwich.
I like them best on rye bread, either the kind with caraway seeds or black Russian rye. Yummy!
