I avoid sugar as I'm not fond of the jitters & I don't really like sweet foods, in general... but 3-4 times/yr I eat a box of Milk Duds. Yeah, fancy schmancy chocolates aren't for me. I found this recipe for Milk Duds, which is supposed to be healthier, as it doesn't contain corn syrup, hydro oils or white sugar (although, we all know the body reacts the same to sugar, honey, Agave, etc.).

Has anyone tried to make these types of candy recipes & how did you like the results?

I haven't tried to make milk duds but I do occasionally make Turtles. I love them and they are really expensive to buy and not a terrible amount of work to make.

My personal opinion is that if I am going to eat candy, I am going to be eating sugar. None of this messing around with trying to make candy without sugar. No attempt to make them healthier, although, there is a lot of good stuff in chocolate and the Turtles contain pecans, and nuts are healthy. Doesn't quite qualify Turtles as health food, though.

Previously, I have tried making Candied Pecans using this recipe: https://www.drberg.com/blog/candied-pecan-recipe and I liked it. I haven't tried it recently because my mom doesn't like cinnamon so much.

I'll try to check your recipe and try this one on weekend.

Understood. I was just hoping I'd get less of a sugar shock with varying ingredients. My mum loves Turtles... although, to be fair, she never met a candy she didn't like. I'm allergic to all nuts (& a million other things), hence my constant quest to find something in the "healthier" realm.

I can't eat nuts, which is too bad, cuz I love chocolate covered peanuts... well, I'm allergic to nuts AND chocolate, so that's not fun. I was going to make the Milk Duds sans the chocolate... so, they're just duds, I guess.

I'll give them a try in a week or 2 & let you know. Or, maybe since MD's are $1 at the $ Store, I should just buy them for the few times/yr I actually eat them. It's different than the turtles, OWS mentioned, which are pricey... I've bought them for my mum.

You could use a sugar substitute. I would look at some low carb web sites. There is no shortage of recipes for either candy or deserts. Not quite sugar but still tasty.

Healthy candy: take those Turkish apricots. The ones that are round, soft, and bright orange. Dip one end in "white chocolate". You can decorate the white coating with sprinkles or chopped nuts, but they look fine just plain.

These are very pretty and delicious. They look like they were a lot of work, but of course, they were no work at all.

Hi Oregon. Sounds nice as a gift... I'll keep it in mind for Christmas.

For me, that's far too sweet, I'm not a fan of white chocolate & I'm allergic to nuts. But, fear not, I bought 2 boxes of Milk Duds at the $ Store, soaked off the chocolate & ate the duds. I went into sugar shock, but it alleviated my sugar fix, which is as rare as the eclipse & I'm fine now.

After looking at all the bother, I think I'll forgo making my own candy. I'll just visit the $ Store in 6-mos when I have another craving.

The center of a milk dud is just caramel. You can make caramel at home, although I suspect that you must own a candy thermometer to make it. It's easy enough and nice fresh caramel is tastier that stale store bought caramel.

You could buy Kraft caramels and I know I have seen sugar free caramels on the candy aisle.

I believe I've made caramel before & you're right, anything homemade, even the simplest of things, is so much better homemade. It's a bit sticky, so good to have little ones around to eat all the good stuff from the wooden spoons! And, I can use up all my wax & parchment paper before I move again in Feb.

I'll wait 'til the holidays, since I always send my mum a UHaul sized box of homemade cookies (about 8 different kinds) & homemade chocolates. Since the kitchen will be covered in flour & confectioner's sugar, that'll be the time for gooey caramel.

I just gave in & had my 2 giant boxes of Duds, which will hold me over 'til then. On sugar free, the sugar substitutes aren't good for you, in my view... mostly aspartame. I don't have a sugar problem, other than I'm a very healthy eater & my body just doesn't like it. Haven't eaten it regularly since trick-or-treating as a kid, but then, given how much candy we ate as kids, it's amazing I have my own teeth & am not as rolly polly as a pumpkin.
