I'm curious if anyone's ever tried substituting peanut butter for tahini when making hummus?
I have tried it but it has been quite a few years. I'm thinking that it was ok in a pinch but not nearly as good as with sesame seeds or tahini. But some may prefer it, whatever you prefer is the right way to make it!

Thanks! I was curious mainly for two reasons:
1) They're both essentially 'nut butters' made from seeds
2) Although I find sesame oil quite potent when used in dressings, etc. I can't say I get a strong sesame taste in hummus when I use tahini, peanut butter being easier for me to find locally I thought it might be worth a shot.
Maybe I'll make a half batch next week just to try it.

LOL, now you've got me thinking! I should try making hummus using almonds and/or walnuts as well.
Here's a great sauce from Engine 2's Ann and Rip Esselstyn.
OMG Walnut Sauce
1 C walnuts
2-4 garlic cloves
1 T tamari sauce
1/4 to 1/2 C water, for preferred consistency
Combine first three ingredients in a food processor adding water to desired texture.
Serve over greens, veggies or as a sauce in wraps.
Enjoy!

Some good cooks in fire companies! Don't know about the tamari but I can see the garlic, walnuts(chopped but probably not pureed), along with cheese over pasta with maybe a little oil/pasta water to set the consistency. And I don't see any reason hummus wouldn't be good with other kinds of nuts.
Following this thread. I tried to make hummus one time and it turned out a lumpy disaster. Going to try some of these ideas.
I am not a hummus making expert, but I have heard that you need to "skin" each garbanzo bean for silkiest hummus. It's not difficult, but time consuming.
What about pressing it through a fine mesh strainer after you make it?
