Yes "Te Amo" can be as strong as "Ai****emasu" (Japanese). People don't just throw it around as in the English language.

I used to be real weird about using the word, but anymore a girl shakes her cute booty in my face or something generally the response is..

For the most part people say "Ich mag... " or "Mir gefällt" ( = "I like") when talking about objects.

Ich mag Eis - I like ice cream.
Mir gefällt dieser Bleistift - I like this pencil.

You can use "Ich liebe..." when you are talking about something that is a great passion of yours.

Ich liebe klassische Musik

And a little note: the "ch" in "ich" is pronounced not like the ch in the English word "change", but rather like the initial "h" in "huge" or "human" but with still a little more emphasis.

Basically, like the J in the Spanish word "jalapeño" or the CH in the Yiddish word "tuchus".
