It's really vicious! I like wine or beer with my dinners, too, but I've noticed I'm able to lose weight if I cut the alcohol, which is not easy if you are all day at my office! The least damage comes from dry read wine. Unfortunately, I like semi-sweet white wine and beer, too. Scotch itself is not too bad, but my ritual involves also lots of nuts and a can of Pepsi...
Alcohol is problematic not because it contains that many calories (unless you go for sugary cocktails), but because it's metabolized first and the fat is never reached...

Yeah, better stick to the dry reds. What I do will make wine lovers sick, but I dilute it with a lot of ice. That's how I get passable quantity.

My mother puts ice in her wine. I just can't do it.
I'm not a snobby wine lover though. I don't think I've ever spent more than $20 on a bottle, and my two current faves are $12 or less. Cheap wine is good wine in my book! lol
