on CD, I've seen this concept used in terms of physical appearance & income, & have noticed many people figure it's acceptable and understandable to consider people to be in different 'leagues' than themselves based on those subjects.
however, while physical appearance is something people don't have "much" control over, and income is "iffy" depending on everything from motivation to luck, there's an additional angle:
at lack of better terminology, a person's "lifestyle" is largely in their own hands- while environmental influences can figure into it, much of a person's lifestyle is a matter of his/her own choice.
so my question is: why is it generally considered acceptable to think someone is beneath you or above you based on circumstances, while it's 'not as' acceptable to do the same when it's a matter of their own lifestyle choices?

Depends on the lifestyle choice.
I mean, if we're talking about someone who deliberately turns down a nice cushy job to be a woodworker or start a charity or anything else like that, then that's a person who has my absolute respect, as long as he pays his own way in life.
If, on the other hand, we're talking about a common slob who sits around all day watching the idiot box and is generally a burden to all who know him, then that's another thing entirely.
I guess I have a different outlook. I don't really have leagues. Just whatever is attractive and if the person has her life together. Far as whether or not they choose to be a certain way, doesn't really matter. More important to have things in common.
