I always buy drinks for female friends and they also buy me drinks. Overall I buy more for them, but I make more money than them and they're like sisters to me so it's all good.
My male friends and I tend to be 50/50 when we go out. Sometimes, they'll buy me dinner (which is nice). I have one friend who takes me out to dinner in exchange for my doing computer work for him. Intent for paying has never been misconstrued by either party.
When I go out with male friends they almost always pay for drinks...etc.
It's either common practice among people my age or people I associate with. I've never asked them to pay for me, the bill is usually settled before it even gets to the table.
As a guy, I sometimes pay for my female friends. I also sometimes pay for my male friends. Sometimes my female friends pay for me. Sometimes my male friends pay for me.
I don't think it means anything related to what you think it means.
