I approached a girl in the bookstore, and my mind went blank (family, American)

Ummm...OP has a long history of "cold approaching" women in public places.
It has never, ever worked yet still he persists.
I really don't think we should be encouraging him, it never ends well.
Ignore the garbage quoted. Approach another girl. Do not bail after the first line. Say anything that comes to mind, just don't bail. Keep trying until it works. You will get better.

saying just anything that comes to mind may not be the best approach either
if i was the op and commented on her nose rings, id have to bite my tongue, not to ask her if she has any other rings
Someone won't take kindly to it one day, he'll pick a woman with a severe dose of pms or something and then some of the (female bashing) posters on here will have a field day bagging the woman who punched him/called the cops/reported him to mall security.
OP I just find your tactics questionable mainly because they're not effective.
You make a habit of "cold approaching" yet you haven't even formulated a game plan if one seems interested.
You need to tighten your game if you're going about trying to chat random women up in public places. At least ask an open ended question! A compliment demands a thank you and nothing further whereas a question demands an answer and hey presto - cold approach achieved. Or not, depending on whether or not she likes the look of you.
So far as I can tell, none of them have yet, which may indicate that the cold approach is the wrong way to go for you, right now at least at this stage of your sexual career.
Seriously though, it doesn't matter how good your conversation is if the woman is there to buy books, not flirt.
How would you know if she's there to look for guys (in addition to books), until you try?
