I realize there is no set standard and this sort of thing varies from woman to woman; but what do women see as the "difference" between cute and handsome and attractive and hot?

I know that women often take "cute" wrongly from men because to women it means one thing while to men it means another. So I'm curious about the female take on the terms I mentioned above because they mean different things in the way you're weird is bad but you're crazy is good unless it's said in anger and dismay.

Anyone?

I never really thought about it too much, but I suppose (for me) it goes like this:

"cute" = good looking and with a nice personality
"handsome" and "hot" = good looking, but either have no idea of personality or a bad personality.
"attractive" = not really good looking, but with such a wonderful personality that who cares.

But really, I don't think along these terms. Either I like a man or I don't. I don't judge the quality of a man by looks. I might like the way a man looks, but it means little to me without the personality to back it up. It's like looking at nice looking car or something. It might be all shiney and cool looking, but it's what's under the hood (or in the case of a man, what's inside) that counts. Maybe it's because I knew too many good looking jerks in my lifetime as well as too many great guys who really weren't "lookers."

To me, cute and hot are both good. I see it as a personality difference that varies according to taste.

Attitude, you know? The old "Ginger vs. Mary Ann" conundrum.

I think I use cute for pretty much everything. Unless I use sexy - but then it's pretty obvious why. Sophia Vergara and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine aren't cute - they're sexy!

Sophia Vergara played Wolverine too?

Cute is what I see when I look at his smile lines. Handsome is what I see when he dresses up for date night. Attractive is what I see all the time. Hot is what I see when he scoops me up and...

I think people who don't feel good about themselves take complementary terms and make them derogatory because they cannot fathom that someone might see good in them. If they cannot, why would anyone else?

I use handsome and attractive interchangeably. Cute means good looking but not incredibly masculine. Hot means I want to bang you.

Here's how I look at them and I am basing solely on looks, not personality.

"Cute" is a guy who has a boyish face, soft smile, not very muscular but physically in shape.
"Handsome" is a guy who has more of a distinguished look and the way he carries himself. He doesn't necessarily need to be in top physical shape or be very muscular.
"Attractive" is a guy who is handsome and has a nice body.
"Hot" is when he can make me fan myself while he's wearing a potato sack . For me, this is someone who not only has a really nice looking face, but has the perfect body for my liking (we all have different likes/preferences).

For example:
Leonardo DiCaprio is cute.
Liam Neeson is handsome.
Patrick Dempsey is attractive.
Johnny Depp, Jon Bon Jovi, Joe Manganiello, Chris Hemsworth, David Beckham.

They are all good to me. I could interchange them all but that's just me.

cute is more of an attitude, I think. Youthfulness, enthusiasm, sweetness. Any guy can be "cute" in this regard. In a physical sense, I would say it applies to a guy who has a very youthful look, no matter what his true age.

handsome - to me this implies a sophisticated look, elegance, traditional or classic good looks

attractive - something a little more visceral, maybe more charisma involved, confidence, a guy who's got it together

hot - sensuality and sexuality are very obvious; he might be beautiful or just ok, but he doesn't give a ****.
