I see all these posts from the PUA/misogynist/virgin contingent ranting about alimony. But is that even a real thing? I have never met a woman who received alimony from an ex in the modern era. I think of it as a 1970s concept, for wives who had little education, and in a time when companies refused to hire women.

Child support, of course is totally different -- everyone should feed their own children.

There was a thread a few weeks aback about the high rate of alimony awards in Colorado.

So I believe it would depend on the area.
(down side, nothing stops someone from going to the area they choose to divorce!)

It still exist but is no longer the "lifestyle to which she has become accustomed to" thing but a leg up for a period to get back on ones feet after income was sacrificed for family. I have seen both men and women who stayed home with kids receive it.

They all seem to have the story about their cousin's coworker's brother's friend who got taken to the cleaners, but like you say, in real life I think I know of one case where alimony was awarded. There aren't good statistics, but from what I've read alimony is awarded in 10% of divorces, which means the vast majority of divorced spouses have nothing to do with it.

Ric Flair was just arrested for not making his alimony payments. Demi Moore is pushing for alimony from Ashton Kutcher.

Of all the divorced men I know, only two are paying alimony. And in both cases it was a long marriage (over 25 years) and the wife either didn't work or worked part time some of the time and earned a tiny fraction of what the husband earned. None of the others I know have to pay alimony.

The amount to which you are entitled (and even the philosophy behind that) is entirely dependent on STATE laws. So you can't generalize about "leg up" or whatnot. It varies greatly. In my state, if you are awarded spousal support (alimony), you get it for half the duration of the marriage. So if you were married 26 years and the judge decides to award alimony, you would pay it for 13 years.

I know of a few cases where a spouse received alimony. In these cases they were all stay at home spouses (some had kids, some didn't)who hadn't worked in years.
