Since the 1950s, how much progress have we made in the objectification of women issue? Meaning, it is more acceptable? is it better? is it a generational women's issue (young versus older)? or have we just recognize that dogma has it's limits when it comes to men's evolutionary biological desires?

In another thread, one female poster commented that just because pro sports commercials objectify women doesn't mean it's acceptable, which for some reason i thought was an odd statement. Then I ran across this article and noticed the Hilda 1950s calendar pics..... thoughts?

Hilda, 1950s Pinup Girl, Makes Us Very Happy

No chance in hell that 1950's woman would be a model these days.

An absolute shame. That is one aspect that has gotten worse.

I see a bunch of very sexy women shown in a very classy way here in 2013. Do ya'll agree or do you buy the lie that only stick thin is sexy?

Ok, please, time out. You guys are hijacking my thread. The questions relates to men objectifying women, not plus sized models vs. skinny. That's a different topic, and something i'm not really interested in discussing cuz it's too subjective.

More along this recent line of thinking: Kate Upton ‘felt terrible’ about herself after Sports Illustrated cover: 'I'm not a toy; I'm human'

Kate Upton
I think the size issue is a part of it. We have objectification saying what is beautiful and what is not beautiful. A woman with more weight on her is even considered beautiful enough to be objectified.

good point, but lets try to steer away. what im saying is men cant help having carnal-emotionless thoughts about women and their body due to evolution and biology yet many women take offensive to men who do that, or at least publicly.

does not verbalizing it make it more acceptable, such as with pro sports commercials featuring hot babes? those commercials say everything but "look at this hot asz babe", which would only confirm the objectifying of the woman based solely on her physical assets,

and then there is porn where, i'm afraid to say, there are some many young women who have engaged in internet porn, it's amazing the sheer volume of women how have done it, if only one time, over the past 20 years. all of them presumably raised by modern mature women.

So my question was, have we really made more progress on this issue or where are we heading?

I think it's a very complicated subject and probably not one that can be described or dissected through a few posts on a message board. To me, there's no way to stop objectification and everyone does it to a certain degree. The problem is when you take that objectification and treat others differently based on that. People do treat those they are attracted to physically much different than those they aren't attracted to and that can become a problem. If I go into a restaurant I expect a certain level of service, but if I'm completely ignored by my waiter because there are prettier girls 2 tables down I'm going to be irritated.

So, objectification is going to happen and there isn't much you can do about it...but I'd prefer people treat others decently regardless of how physically attractive they are. I also know that this is a pipe dream.

This has always been done and it doesn't bother me. I think it's nice when people admire women (or men), and what's great about today is that women have the choice and opportunity to become whatever they want to be. They don't HAVE to be one thing or the other, they can be whatever they want and the doors are open. Feminism was about giving women the choice to do whatever they wanted to do and that has happened. It wasn't meant to do away with anything but the inability (by law) to be whatever they want. Everything else is going too far and too controlling.

I'm surprised by the sheer numbers of women who do porn too. I prefer the clothed (albeit skimpy) pinups.
