When I was a kid, I broke my bed by jumping on it, and my parents decided to punish me by forcing me to sleep on a supposedly uncomfortable IKEA futon. The first few days it was uncomfortable due to the fact that I slept on my side, but I adjusted to it and slept on my back. I slept like a baby since then. Nevertheless, we had two of these futons, and every guest that slept on such futon was hardly able to get a good night's sleep.

I'd say this mattress has the firmness a fractional part softer than a carpeted floor.

How big of a deal would this be?

I don't think this is anything to worry about.

I slept on a futon before. It's not horrible. Slept on chairs too. I think being short has it's advantages.

I think bringing a date home to your parents will be more of an issue than the beds comfort level

Get one of those memory foam covers -- at least 2". Air it out for a week or so (they smell pretty nasty when they're new), then put it on the bed any time you think there's a chance.

(She'll probably let you know if she thinks your bed is terrible. But, she might just never come back.)

I have to have a firm/hard mattress due to back issues.

Soft ones in motels cripple me up the next day.

Hard mattresses keep the spine and discs aligned while sleeping.
