In fact, I know a couple women who consider a guy spending too lavishly early on as a potential red flag...
Count me among them. More often than not, the ones who spend a ton of money on the first few dates seem to think that a woman is obligated to have sex with them in return. Nope!

Absolutely. Anything that smacks of sweeping-her-off-her-feet, such as falling in love too soon, acting enthralled by her and showering her with complements, smacks of a hidden agenda. It's manipulative. Though some women with little dating/relationship experience fall for that, until they learn from experience.
Dude, most women are smarter than that. You can't spend your way into her heart. Or was that not the organ you were interested in? Some women will get hooked on gift-giving and nice dinners. But they won't respect you or be seriously into you. You'll just end up being taken for a ride. If you don't mind that, then go ahead.

But what if a man is really crazy about a woman (let's say she is smoking hot) and he wants to do all that stuff for her anyway? Should he restrain himself?

My take: there's a middle ground. If you're into her, that message will get across in the general way you treat her and talk to her. If you're interested in her ideas, her interests, who she is as a person, she'll get the message. Small gestures in the beginning (like rbohm posted on another thread--token gifts that show you were listening to her when she mentioned things she liked or reacted to things in a store with you) can say a lot. You can ramp up after you know she's into you, and things are cooking along well. Give yourself time to get to know her, so you can be sure she doesn't have a major downside, like maybe she's bat-sh*t crazy, or has a history of depression, or something.

In the early dating stages, YES, restrain yourself and don't go overboard. Otherwise you'll come off needy and she'll be afraid you're going to get smothery.
According to some women on here, when a man spends money on her early on it means he really cares....making her feel "special", so the more he spends the more "special" she'll feel LoL.

Okay seriously, OP? You do realize that every single woman out there is her own individual person. Some women do. Some don't. Some men expect something when they spend a lot. Some don't. That's how individuality works.

Is he doing it for her, or in fact, doing it for himself, at that point when he doesn't know her at all.
Individuality is overrated I;ve noticed that everyone strives to be special snowflake these days.
What does this have to do with the OP's question?
