I never found copy and paste messages to work. All my messages were personalized to match the profile... I got maybe a 20-25% success rate with that method (as far as getting a first date goes). And I met someone online with a personalized message and we've been dating for a few months now.
Maybe someone who has incredible luck finding a relationship with a cut and paste message can chime in.
Actually, Ok Cupid's data showed copy pasta and/or boilerplate as 75% as effective as personalized messages at worst. Considering the time investment, not a bad plan.

An inordinate percentage of people do it. I'd be guessing mainly men as they drive messaging traffic ~5:1. On average, reply rates are quite low (I was lucky to get a reply once in 50 messages or so), so I think it becomes the logical choice. That, or wait for women to message.
I personally never sent ctrl-v anything. There simply weren't enough women that met my criteria to bother with it.
I meant the "minimal effort" mantra is not how it works.
Otherwise, you'll get the dregs who sleep with you, then tell you you need to work out.
But I guess ... as long as they sleep with you, you don't care, right?
