I can't blame you for breaking it off with a miser like that! How can you possibly have a good time if he spends the date calculating how to proportion the bill!?
I was half kidding with my coffee and bagel comment, although it would have certainly been an acceptable form of apology. Typically, in my relationships I will cover 95%+ of all expenses usually up to the 2nd month or so and start allowing her to pay after that, only if she insists (not just simply asking); apparently with the exception of a beverage here and there!
As for tit and tat... This was WAY off from the start. I accommodated her schedule with the time, I picked an area less than 2 miles where she would be prior to the date (15 miles from where I work/live) and I showed up early. Maybe in addition to all that I should have emptied the contents of my gym bag and covered the wet ground from her car to the door of the building? How foolish of me!
