Why does that annoy me so much? Like my friend and her boyfriend (who are in their 40's). Can't ever talk to each other without saying babe or baby. "Babe do you need a drink". "Can you pass me a napkin baby". "Babe are we leaving?" "Are you going with us baby". "Babe can we sit here? Babe over here....babe?". It's just seems so unnatural to me.

You will probably relate to this Seinfeld joke:

Should I gather you're not one for appreciating affectionate gestures?

It's no different than calling someone "hon," "sweetheart," "love," "dear," etc.

But natural for them.

Do you refer to your SO by first name?

"Babe" has been primarily between my wife and I . Some of my female friends that I've had in my life a long time (longer than my wife) call me "sweetheart", "sweetie", and "jagiya".

Babe, baby, honey, sweetheart. My lady and I both hardly ever referred to each other by our given names. If we did, it was either in the context of anger or annoyance, or VERY severe affection. Contradictory as that sounds, that was the case. I very much miss hearing her say my name, in either light....

Not sure why it would annoy you?

My husband and I have pet names for each other that we use habitually. So much that on the rare ocassion that I use his real name, as in "Good morning, Oliver" he gives me a weird look and/or thinks I'm angry with him about something.

Different strokes I guess? That would not be my first choice.
