My ex and I broke up a year ago after dating for two years. We fell out of love with each other. I live in a small town, whenever i run into my ex at the bar or a restaurant. We lock eyes (always) for like 10 seconds or less. Its been a year almost since we broke up... does anyone else have this experience with an ex? We dont speak to each other just lock eyes whenever we are in the same room.

If it’s a small town then I’m sure youd run into as many ex’s as you have. Eye contact is just human nature especially for people that you know or were intimate with.

Chances are you're both wondering what the other is thinking.

Nope. I talk to them like people, I don't just stare at them.

I've had the opposite, with my ex husband, when we have met up for whatever reason (usually to discuss something related to parenting responsibilities) I find I avoid looking at him or making eye contact. But I guess maybe that's because I've been on the receiving end of a lot of hostility from him in the last few years, so it's that impulse to be invisible and get away and not be in the presence of someone who makes you distinctly uncomfortable.

You guys shared something so it's not like glancing at a stranger. It may be a bit uncomfortable for him, he doesn't know what to say so he just looks for a minute. I think when people really want something they take action.

Smile next time and see what happens. That will show you what the staring means.

They say that the opposite of love is indifference. Neither of you have reached that point yet obviously.

It is likely uncomfortable for both of you. Neither of you know what to expect when you encounter each other yet.

And, since you are in a small town, it would be better if you could move onto a civil type friendship which would help you both and likely your friends as well.
