A "Douchebag" is a person with a misplaced ego and exaggerated sense of self-worth, and the trainwreck of a life that results. Douchebags can be selfish, yes, but I would say they are people who show their lack of empathy in a blatantly uncool way.
i.e. someone who is not liked, and does not realize it.
So my question is, why are guys douchebags? Is that just a fancy term for a selfish person?
I've heard this term used by guys for women too. Nearly always, the guy could easily have the term used against him, too. Perhaps it takes one to know one!
As for what it means, all I can say is it isn't a term of endearment.
It's not meant as an excuse. It's simply a derogatory term. Like calling someone an assh***.
Maybe not necessarily an excuse but I know that there have been many times when I'm talking to a very close guy friend of mine and I ask him a question about another guy and his behavior so I can get a male's perspective on things and it seems like "he's a douchebag" is the reason why most of the time.

Like I said....it's just a derogatory term. Don't attach so much importance to the term. Just take it for a general "dis" of the guy, that's all. Find one that DOESN'T behave that way.
