I think a better question is if a man has thinning or balding hair, or is bald, are they better off shaving?
Depends what kind of pattern they have. If it's the kind where they end up with two "wings" on the side, I'd say yes. Shave it off! My ex- just has a hairline that keeps moving back, and as long as it stays very short, it's fine.
And yes- I love a trimmed gotee, especially on men with really dark hair. And I mean "neatly" trimmed, especially around the mouth.
