I feel you, it's very unattractive. It also doesn't look good when women wear them and you can see panty lines, it's makes their rear end look big or like they are wearing diapers.
You should respect your girlfriends need to wear comfortable underwear. Perhaps if you (while sporting commando) would take two shoestrings and place them in your behind/crotch area....tie them to your belt loops and wear them all day, you could appreciate her preference for underwear.

It's totally the opposite in my experience - boyshorts give me a wedgy, I'll take a bikini style anyday! I used to love the silky string bikini's Victoria's Secret used to do - they discontinued them years ago and I STILL haven't found decent replacements.
I would take the time to surprise her every now and then with a matching bra and panty/thong set. I would not suggest you start the thong/panty sets but start out with a compromise. First buy a few matching sets:bra and boy shorts. Boy shorts can be like many daisy dukes and with heals can be cute. This will give her the comfort she seeks while giving you the opportunity to enjoy her assets in a different presentation. Then after a few months of that you want to move onto other items like teddy's. This will get her used to something lacy that does not cover her entire backside but can be cute, lacey, and feminine. Then a few months after that you are onto thongs.
