I was over my in-laws last weekend. They had an apple on the counter, so I had one. Stood in the kitchen eating it (biting into it).

The house is open from the kitchen to the family room. Father in-law asks if I want a knife to cut that up. Gee, I wonder what he really meant.

Is it rude to bite into an apple while at the in-laws?

He probably wanted to know if you preferred to divide the apple into smaller pieces.

Strictly speaking, yeah, I think you're supposed to cut it up. Plus, some people are really noisy with a juicy apple, and stuff runs down their faces. In a casual setting, I don't see a problem with it. If you weren't being gross, maybe your father-in-law was just being polite. He could have just been asking a reasonable question.

If you're are going to eat the whole thing then hork it down. It's really just a matter of preference.

I don't think it's rude at all. There is nothing better than biting into a nice, big, juicy apple! Cutting it up takes something away from it, I think.

Who cares? Its just an apple. You can eat it either way, although some probably prefer to cut it up. But if you're going to bite into it, remember, pinky up.

Seriously, it doesn't matter and if it bothers some, I just think that's ridiculous. There's more important things to worry about than that.

Totally agree.

Besides, how many of us have taken it into the car with us. Or to work or somewhere where there is no knife.

I can imagine.

"Honey, how was your day."
"Well it was horrible. I brought the apple to work and I had no knife so I couldn't eat it."

I was being neat about it. He thinks his way is better than everyone elses. I think I'll have another apple there next time we visit.

Its rude if it were only one apple. Not rude if it was from a bowl of apples.

Its rude if your in-laws are Buddhists and the apple was in front of their "shrine" to Buddha. Or if your in-laws are Thai and the apple was in front of a picture of the King.

Did you ask permission to eat his apple?
