I just received an email from a friend, someone I met online a while back but didn't click with; we still stay in touch.
He wrote to wish me a happy holiday and asked how I was doing. I responded with, "Thank you. I hope yours is a great one. I'm doing well, how about you?" He said he was fine, sick of shopping but excited at the same time, yadda, yadda. He then asked me how long I have been doing the kind of work I've been doing. I responded, "5 years". He said, "You're a woman of few words. LOL."
Now, you really couldn't tell with how long winded I am here, but I've been told this several times via email and I'm starting to get a complex. Really, what else am I supposed to say? When someone asks a direct question, I give a direct answer. How does one elaborate on "5 years?".
I think : old friends who don't keep up, feel compelled to pick up exactly where they left off. guilt (and maybe desperation?) sets in when that inevitably fails to happen.
if it is an online friend, I mean, that typed communication is the entirety of your relationship with one another, right?

We've met out a few times for lunch, but yes, it is mostly online communication.

I know what you mean, PTC....just last night I had someone say something similar to me. Usually I can write a small novel but sometimes I just don't have any more to say. Or maybe I'm in a crummy mood and don't feel like saying any more. But you're right...there are things you just cannot expand on. Maybe this guy expected you to talk about your entire employment history? Who knows....
I hear ya, PTC. I tend to keep some convos brief too because I could go on and on expounding on every fine point of minutia, but at some point somebody would scream at me to "Shut the hell up and stuff a sock in it already!!!"

You could have stretched it out a bit by writing out FIVE LOL.
Sounds like he was just looking for a bit more interaction - in other words, not just an answer to his question but perhaps another question about him and what's going on in his life?
I answer like that too. I guess he wanted a detailed description of your job? Thats what I would assume. I do try to finish short answers with a question back. When I don't people ask me why I am mad. Which confuses me. I guess I should be tittering about and twirling my hair more.

True, I get that. However, I already asked him how he was doing.

He already knows about my owrk, I guess he forgot how long I'd been doing it or maybe we never discussed it. Reasonable question. But I don't really do the hair twirling thing either.

I get it. I'm have been on both ends of this and it's made me aware of how I respond to people.
When you respond with "5 years," you're not really engaging him in conversation. Maybe that's why you do it (I don't know). It can suck having a one-sided conversation.
