It's not different than women over 25 who can't or WON'T go down on a man. You have to want to do it, and often those men who aren't very good at it are probably just going through the motions and don't really want to be there. Usually when you enjoy something you do better at it, at least speaking for myself.

Excellent point! Porn should not be used as a tutorial. You really have to "feel" what you are doing, otherwise you're just going through the motions like painting a fence.
I guess I was fortunate to get good at this at a young age. I mean I have a few tricks up my sleeve, but to be honest, it's all about reading the woman to find out what she likes. Women are very responsive to different things and if you actually pay attention to her responses then you can tell what she likes, and will end up with excellent results.

Is it unrealistic to expect - and yes, I do mean expect - a 40 year old man who has had a few long term relationships in addition to other partners to be competent in bed AND know how to give oral?

Fact is most guys don't know how to give oral. They think they know, but in reality they don't know.
Im nowhere near that age...but just because they were in relationships that long DOESNT mean they were any good in the sack. Maybe at that age they can get it up un-aided, but there's still no guarantee he knows what to do with it.
And I'll probably get chewed about this...but dont erm..."aged" people have alot less to choose from dating-wise? Maybe those other people just didnt say anything to him??
