I was watching a PBS special on India when the presenter makes a excellent case for instead of concentrating on the great conquers, our children would be better served studying those who had the greatest lingering impact on world history; Buddha, Confucius, *Jesus, and Mohammed.

What say you?

I would consider including them in the context that these people, whether real or imaginary, have influenced people around the world.

I say wrong.

You learn about history for example the Crusades happening because of Christianity and Islam clashing. And because of religion you can see nothing has changed in the last 1000 yrs in the Middle East.

What has shaped the great civilizations more, conquest by great military leaders or those who shaped the world's great religions?

The religions may not have changed but the changes that they have wrought with regards to the structures of cultures and societies is quite a different story.

One of the best classes I took in high school was Comparative World Religions. It taught me a lot, not as religious instruction but as an education of the world around me and what different people believe, and why.

And read various religious texts as part of English classes, too. Just as works of literature.

Religious Education In Public School's That I Would Endorse.

Complete separation of Church and State is something I would endorse. Why would you assume everyone would appreciate your version of religion? Teaching mythology as fact does no one any good.

NOT!!! I want my children to pick whatever religion, or belief that they want, when they're old enough to make their OWN choice.

No, because the bible beating teachers will use that to teach their personal beliefs, and I'm sure the ET'ers would love to traumatize a classroom full of little kids with the nonsense of the world is going to end this year.
