Been at this on-line debate thing for a number of years. I have learned a lot about atheism, atheists and their arguements against theism and Christianity.

Heard (read) everything from the reasonable (challenging) to the ridiculous and totally unfounded (what I call "faith building").

I have concluded that basically* nothing is changed as far as what people believe, except for the learning experience. Both sides have their "pat arguements" which are either ignored, laughed at or simply dismissed. (not to long ago I posted a rebuttal, complete with supporting links. It was dismissed in less than a minute by the other poster-less than a minute! It was obvious that my post gererated a reaction instead of a response.)

As for you: what is the point of posting here?

Me? In real life I have a ready response to the standard arguements of the atheist. Fairly effective when the other person has to think on his feet. So yea. The education.

*Yes, I have won a few converts over the years.

It keeps the mind active. And, when forced to defend your position, it causes (or, SHOULD cause) one to re-evaluate his beliefs.

Also, unless you've got the most closed of minds, it helps you see people on the other side as people, not stereotypes.

I post here because I think religion is detrimental to the human race. I can think of nothing that religion has done for us that we could not have accomplished without it. I point that out whenever possible.

I just have time to burn at my job. I rarely post off hours.

But I do learn a lot, get brain excercise and credit this site with helping me soothe my temper and not react to instant provocation.

I think you misunderstood the comment you responded to, unless by "you" you mean others.

I post here because Our True Lord God urges me to in its overwhelming kindness and love. The Lord God inspires me to better myself and others. The Lord God thinks the anti-agnostics lost their chance, and proved themselves unfit for Greatness.

Boy, that's an awfully negative reason to post!

Could not agree more. On both points. The truth will win.

And a waste of time! The only people who will agree are people who already agree with your POV.

Honestly, I think that anyone who only comes to this forum to try to convert people (to Christianity, Islam, atheism, etc.) is going to be greatly disappointed and frustrated. Most of the people on here have very strong beliefs - and aren't likely to do a 180 just because of what someone else posts. However, if you come here to learn - you'll probably be pretty satisfied. For me - I've learned so much in my time here. I'm not religious - but have had some bad experiences with some very religious people. It helps me to understand where they are coming from and to not take certain things so personally. I think I'm finding ways to be more tolerant and accepting. Oh - and just for the record - I never had a grudge against all very religious people - but being on here has helped me understand the ones that I have had problems with in the past.
