He studied to become a priest, then became an atheist bolshevik who destroyed churches.
During WW2, when Christian Russians supported Christian German liberators, he changed
his colors again and reopened some churches [the Germans had reopened thousands of
churches in German occupied Russia.] After the war, he was atheist again.

I know the book the OP is referring, simply because I saw it at a bookstore the other week. The name? Cannot remember.... sorry!
