I just received news that a longtime friend of mine (for 28 years), a very dedicated Christian man, just died. A loving, generous and devoted husband and artist, he was instantly killed in an unfortunate accident.

He was a very humble and dedicated Christian, and accepted my own intellectual blatherings about atheism with a smirk and a knowing smile, always accepting that "every man was entitled to their own twisted and distorted ideas!", as he used to joke.

Anyhow, he's gone. In a blink. I am truly saddened tonight.

Why? Why would a truly loving God not take, for instance, me, the sarcastic atheist I remain even after Dave's death?

Hard to fathom for me: your unseen God working in mysterious ways again?

No...just hard for you to fathom.

I'm really, really sorry to hear that, rifleman. About God working in mysterious ways, I think maybe He had nothing to do with it. As you said yourself, your friend was killed in an accident. At any rate, my thoughts are with you. Good friends are not all that easy to come by.

Sorry about your loss, however death is like a thief in the night,it knows no age. The positive thing is that he has gone home to be with the Lord and that is a comforting thing to his family and friends who are believers.

instantly killed doesn't sound so unfortunate. Will you be that lucky? Will any of the rest of us? What best can we hope for except that his life was good, full, fulfilled? Condolences to all. But think of the positive, there might be a chance that reality is sinester enough to have simply been a training ground and he...who knows... passed? The positive thing is that even an atheist knows that he is sound asleep. unless, ofcourse, his identity was just software, not hardware. . Maybe, Rifle, his software is somewhere, running somehow... smiling upon the thought of you... and all your entitlements. The Love you've shared, The people you've helped, The things you've accomplished.

Sorry about your loss rifleman...I guess as we age that happens more often. So far I've said goodbye to five good friends, and many family members, the last was just two weeks ago...It is the price we pay for living a long time.

You jest but that is likely to be the answer you will get, yes. It was his time and God called him home, they will tell you.

My sympathies for the loss of your friend. Perhaps you can fathom that your friend is where HE KNOWS he was going when he died, to be with the God he believed in.
