Wishing all a Ziessen Pesach (PEH-sahkh, PAY-sahkh), a sweet Passover.
The 8-day Jewish Biblical Festival of Pesach (Ex. 12:14-20, 13:1-10 and Lev. 23:4-8) begins on the 15th day of the month of Nissan (that's the Babylonian 'Nissan', not the Japanese 'Nissan'), which this year, because it coincides with Shabbat (Sabbath), will be at 18 minutes before sunset, this evening, Friday, April 6, on the civil calendar.
Named for the 'passing over' of the Angel of Death that slew the first born sons of the Egyptians, Pesach celebrates the liberation of the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt and the beginning of the Israelite, now Jewish people, and has been continuously celebrated for more than 3,300 years.
So how were your seders? We had a big seder table the first night with grandparents, aunts, uncles and a couple in town who didn't have where to eat. Second night was just my wife, me and the kids. Our seders lasted until about 1:30 am each night (we ate Afikomen before chatzos - halachic midnight - both nights). Just a beutiful start to the 8 day holiday.
We're now in the 4 interim days of the holiday called Chol HaMoed. My kids are off from school for the entire holiday. We have fun activities planned each day for them.
For me, this might be my favorite of the Jewish holidays. I love the food. The family time. And the whole holiday, built around the concept of the redemtion of the Jewish people.
