Now I'm not an expert concerning Islamic belief. Yet I've always heard Jesus' reference concerning the Helper (Comforter, Counselor), whom He would send, was a reference to Muhammad someone correct me if I'm wrong. Well, while in chuch the other day, we were reading in the book of John. I stumbled across an interesting verse in John ch. 14 verse 26. It reads....
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."
Right there, Jesus specifically tells us who the Helper is. So that was interesting when I read it. Many people don't really consider the Book of John to be credible concerning the things the historical Jesus actually did, yet concerning what the book does say, it lists out who the Helper is. Ultimately, it cannot be Muhammad.

I agree. All religions make their holy books say what they want them to say. The Muslims had to find some way to legitimize their religion in the face of emerging Christianity, especially since they had no evidence that Muhammad ever existed.
I have never heard Muhammad equated with the "helper" mentioned by Jesus. Especially since, as you mention, Jesus was quite clear about who the "helper" was, and since Muhammad was a flesh and blood prophet it's impossible to equate him with the spirit of god.
I looked it up and the basis of the claim of Islam that this a prophecy about Muhammad is based on quite a reach. In the Quran, the coming of the prophet Ahmad ("praised one") is "foretold" and this is periclytos in Greek. In the original Greek where Jesus is talking about "helper" the word paraclete is used. But although similar, they are not even the same word. Paraclete really does mean "helper" and periclytos really does mean "praised one".

What? I thought Muhammad was an actual historical figure (the same can't necessarily be said of Jesus). When he died, the Sunnis and Shiites were started because different heirs claimed the faith.

Thanks for this information. Yeah I heard about the belief that Jesus was referring to Muhammad concerning the Helper before. Of course this was something I never understood about Islam. You can't validate your beliefs using anything concerning Jesus. You pretty much have to twist everything said about Him concerning what is written in the Gospels.

He's only claimed by the Muslims as a historical figure. There are no contemporary writings about him. Even the Koran wasn't released until years after he would've died. There are no eyewitness accounts of him, only hearsay, similar to Jesus.
