Perhaps it depends on how desperate they are to attract or retain a congregation - and keep the coffers filled.
It may not be the case in Yankland but here in AUS all the traditional mainstream churches are struggling - except perhaps the Catholics.
You can buy dead churches for conversion to houses or restaurants or whatever for peanuts.
And whilst some of the Fundie Pentacostal types seem to be thriving, overall, church attendance has diminished to the proportion of a flea on an elephant's rump.
Long may it continue - says this smiling agnostic.
Well, we are of the "fundie Pentecostal" persuasion, so those are the only ones I know about. My mother- in- law, who attends a local Episcopal church, however, also reports that women are wearing slacks to her church now. So... I suspect we are just beginning to see some differences in how much society dresses up... to go anywhere not just to church.
In "my day" I remember wearing a suit and tie every time I went to Church. Now when I go people wear tired torn tee shirts and faded jeans. Maybe this is not the case all over the country. Maybe "down south" people still have some self respect and wear their Sunday best in Church.
What do you think about casual clothes vs dressing up for Church? How is it at your place of worship?
At my church in Charleston, WV, we still dress up for Church services. Most of the men wear suits and the women still wear dresses. No pants for the women of this church. Maybe a visitor will wear slacks, but not the members. All elders and the Pastor wear suits. Hope this makes you feel better.

im guna wear my suit sunday when i usher for sure. thanks for the reminder.
I wouldn't want birthday suits in church, now that would keep me home if it were required!
If there were nudist churches I might become a regular visitor and maybe even put a little money in the collection plate. (oh, wait a minute, where would I keep my wallet??)

Well, duh, Montana..You put your billfold in your fannypack
I feel people should wear what they usually wear going about thier daily business. If they wear a suit and tie every day, then that is what they should go to church with. If they go about in casual attire every day, then that is what they should appear in church with. Otherwise, putting on a suit and tie is kind of like putting on a false covering...to impress others. God looks on the heart, so we absolutely should not judge others by what clothing they wear. There are quite a few people who don't own a suit and tie, and can't afford them...

I'm not about to go to church is scrubs, which is what I wear most of the time. I like to dress up a little, have few opportunities to do so. I don't look upon it as trying to impress. People at my church in Boulder, CO wear everything. I am glad my daughters go to church, regardless of what they wear.
Aren't you suppose to be going to Church to worship Christ? Why are you paying attention to what people are wearing?
This is a subject I will rant about if ever I get a chance.
I'm a preacher's kid and this is one of my biggest pet peeves. My church welcomed everyone. I went to a friend's church one Sunday and the Pastor actually told a person to leave because she wasn't dressed appropriately for Church. I got up and walked out with her.
I took her over to my Church where she became a lifelong member.
The fact that they are there is what is important not the clothes on their backs (or lack of for the fannypackers )
