Fox News article:

Global warming: Is it really a crisis?

FOXNews.com - Global Warming: Is It Really a Crisis? - Opinion

My comments:

It is my opinion that global warming has become a religion to many people, with the earth as a god.

Let me use the following points to illustrate this:

1. It is filling people with a fervor and purpose, while they seemingly ignore facts.

2. People who speak out against this are ridiculed and silenced.

3. Some people would die for this, and some acts of terrorism have occurred to promote this.

Clearly, this has gone beyond simply science and good earth management. I believe in being a good steward, and trying to keep the earth clean and beautiful for the next generation.. but what is it that has caused this movement to gain such proportions?

Faith or science?

The reaction to commerce.
In politics and business cutting corners to produce as cheap as possible has always been favoured over (expensive) ´green solutions´.

True. People have always been distrustful of big business... and it usually is in style to speak out against the "big guys." But we can't (or shouldn't) mix this distrust with science, and have it distort facts, should we?

The problem with science is that it all becomes about the interpretation of the facts. If you have research that says X, it will not be hard to do another research which counters X.
Unfortunately it is just like the Christian denominations who all interpreting the Bible differently but all believe that only their denomination has the truth.

I think Global Warming is possible.

I think that because it may be happening but I cannot detect it. The idea is based upon data from the 1880's that when compared to current trends in climate that the average temperature is 1.6 degrees F warmer. There are several problems that go with the theory.

1. Is the trend a natural trend? Our earth does go through cycles and it might be part of the glacial thaw/freeze system.

2. How accurate was the temperature readings of the 1880's. I mean they were using vials of glass with hand markings on the side. There were no standardized, mass produced measuring equipement of the day!

3. What percentage of the change in temperature can be attributed to humans. I have heard of the 1.6 degrees only .6 of a degree is attributed to humans.

4. If we have affected the earths temperature to warm up on average is there anything we can do to reverse the trend. We have not had any data to show that if we all stoped using our cars something will happen. There is no testing that has show what we can do.

So, am I going to do anything? No, I am not going to waste my time. If however, I was going to buy a car and there was some hydrogen vehicle that I could buy for a very similar price and still was stylish etc.... then I may go with the one that doesn't polute the environment. Will I go out of my way to live green and pay 20K to have solar panels on my roof? No way. I would consider reducing my carbon foot print if Al Gore did the same and actually lived a life according to what he was preaching. I mean if he bought a smaller house say 3000 sq ft home instead of the 5000 sq ft home he was in or if he flew coach instead of having his own personal jet that might convince me. I think the guy is acting like an environmental hypocrit. He should not be allowed to talk to any president or president candidit until he got his own act together. He wants all of the middle and lower class people take public transit while he has a fleet of limosines all reved up, running waiting for him to decide if he is going to go to dinner.

Global warming is a fact. You can chart the temperature over time and it is increasing....

HOWEVER

The CAUSE is unknown. It's believed to be caused by carbon dioxide, however I think there are too many variables to know what the cause is. We have yet to know what caused previous shifts in global temperature such as the mini ice age, so I don't believe that they can acurately determine what is causing it now.

The point of the thread was not to promote or deny global warming, rather to focus on the points I mentioned... which IMO speaks of a phenomenon that is something apart from science.

What is the cause of this?

You have defined the point...Gaia worship...

Man has a need that is built in to our design to worship. Most of the Global warming fanatics are Gaia worshippers.

godspeed,

freedom
