I've know of more than one atheist who had a change of heart on his or her deathbed. Easy to say Never on an internet form. Not the same when one is facing their own demise

That's true.

I knew an atheist who became a Mormon.

Been there, done that.
I was not expected to survive and the hospital called for a priest to administer the Last Rites. (They hadn't updated my chart as to my religion)

I came to and was horrified to see a Russian Orthodox priest flapping around my bed like a giant black crow and muttering incantations. I gathered up what little breath I could muster and told him to get the hell out of my room.

Lack of oxygen to the brain tends to cause such a transformation.

What about the demise of two million children under the age of five who starve to death every year?

Easy to say "I believe" on an internet forum.

Not the same when one sees the emaciated corpses of hundreds of thousands of innocent children who God chose not to feed, because he was too busy blessing Sarah Palin with TV shows.

I guess when there is no alternative, there is always.... hope - the cornerstone of many a religion.

I don't know what I'd do in a really desperate situation, like getting slow tortured to death for example. Maybe I would turn to hope, but it's hard to imagine that I would suddenly develop a whole new way of looking at existence.... one that is so contrary to the way I think now.

So if you were being tortured while watching those you love most being tortured as well, would you renounce your belief in God in order to stop the torture?

Nope.

1) I don't believe in sin. Its a religious concept. Only applies to the religious.

2) Nope. I will die proud of the life I have lead and hope that my spirit will be celebrated by my loved ones.

3) Can't confess or ask anything of someone that I don't believe exists. That is like asking a Christian would they confess to another religion's god.

The Christian god belongs to Christians. A non-Christian does not fall under the same rules, sanctions, "sins" or what have you. Despite what they may teach you, you need to belong to that particular religious group in order for those religious rules to apply.
