NOTE: I actually hate politricks, but I can't help but notice some similarities between the second half of the 20th and the past few years of this century and how bible talk and accompanying fearmongering and catchphrases were/are used by those trying to protect their greedy interests.
Let me just put in an advance alert that I'll issue infractions and lock the thread if it is made partisan politics instead of Religion. Consider yourselves warned.
Yes, I saw this a few weeks ago and IIRC the basic thesis is that the church or at least evangelicals in the US have been gamed / used by corporate interests and their agenda is really corporate america's agenda or at least highly supportive of / codependent upon it.
I think there's some truth to that but as the mod just said I don't know how to discuss it in a way that won't devolve into political wrangling that doesn't belong here. Perhaps the way forward is to just say that evangelical Christians would be more credible if they weren't so consistently of one political voice, typically very conservative Republican up to and including Tea Party. The same argument would apply to liberal Christians; we have some liberal theists here who are also politically or at least fiscally conservative but I don't see much of that out in the real world.
But perhaps this is just how it has to be; maybe it has more to do with certain personality types and brain wiring being attracted to the left or right both religiously and politically. After all, conservative religion and conservative politics both sell moral certainty and simplicity and some people really, really want / need that. And liberal religion and liberal politics both sell inclusiveness and social justice and high ideals and some people really want / need to reach for that.
It is true that the politics of Christians changes with the times. Sometimes I think organized religion is nothing more than politics itself. Men trying to define God by their own values, as a way of enforcing their beliefs. And there does seem to be many conflicting statements within the Bible (of course).
Notice that when the New Testament was written Jesus was reinforcing the message of the prophets (social justice) while discounting many of the laws that were in the books of Moses as meaningless, which often seemed to be conservative in nature.
why is it there are so many who are so hell-bent on killing one another because of their different beliefs. I believe that if we sit down and talk to one another and learn about each other, we will find that we have a lot in common and very possibly be able to avert all of the unnecessary killings. I am glad to see that Secretary of State, Mr. Kerry is a Vietnam Veteran as myself. It seems as though that some of us old warriors have seen the horrors of war and do not wish to see them again and yet there are those young individuals in certain positions of power who are looking for the glory of war, not realizing the sacrifice of lives that it entails. this is why old warriors should be the negotiators for peace,we understand war.
Yes, if you want to dupe millions into voting against their interests, in order to enrich yourself & your ilk...you use religion to do it.
