I'm sure women who were brutally raped and murdered, then had their bodies dumped in the woods wrapped in a Glad® trash bag will be comforted to know they were part of a plan.
Yea, sure and if atheism is true, I'm sure the parents of those women would be comforted knowing their daughters served no purpose in life but to be an accident birth, grow up to be raped and murdered and dumped like trash since they served no purpose anyway. So why would they care in the first place?

You misrepresentation of atheists and their position aside, some people do not need a fairy tale to live their life, or comfort them in times of sadness. Not believing in a God makes you take life far more seriously. If this is all we have, we will make the most of it. For you, you live in fear of what MAY happen when you die, with the HOPE that something good MAY come.

As Christians we have confidence when we die will go to another dwelling place called Heaven, Earth is just a short term brevity of life. So no, there is not fear but knowing there is much more happiness when we depart from this world.

What is your motivation for staying on the earth then? Why not go straight to heaven if it's so great?

That doesn't answer the idea that a girl is raped, murdered, put in a trash bag and tossed to the side of the road like garbage. If that is all that girl has, that is rather bleak and extremely crass. And it gives absolutely no comfort to the parents of that girl. How would you comfort those parents with your shallow, heartless and bleak outcome for that girl?
Well, don't feel bad parents. Your daughter was an accident. Her life was meaningless and so is your life. You have no reason to be here so you have no reason to be sad at your daughter's murder. It just happened, thats all. Her death is just as meaningless as her life. Now get over it and just try to make the most of your meaningless life. Maybe something good MAY come. Maybe you can go out and get an ice cream cone.

This is my point though, Eusie. Religion is nothing more than a "comfort". It is used to comfort those who are afraid of their mortality, and wish for something more. If all your religion is good for is comfort, then that says a lot about WHY you believe it. It is the same for those who eat sweets when they are stressed, or drink or do drugs to forget their problems. It isn't MY job to comfort parents of dead children. But again, if that is your best argument for your religion (It comforts people in times of stress. So does booze, drugs, food, etc), then that says a lot.
What do you find ridiculous about it? If it's where you want to go, why wouldn't you expedite your way to penultimate happiness?
I'm legitimately curious.
The only answer I have ever received to this question is:
"God hasn't decided I'm finished here yet" or something similar. Fact is, they are just as unsure as everyone else, and are in no hurry to find out if they were right.

That and the reality is that many believe suicide to negate their entry ticket. Which, is itself an indication that they are motivated by the fear of not going to the special place, and instead ending up in the other place.
But it is interesting that for so many believers who think the world is going to crap...they certainly aren't in a rush to get to the happy place.
