Not that there are not whackos who do polygamy, there are. But the media is feeding you lies.
I live in California. I have one wife and two kids, but I am the oldest son of a man with three wives and 38 children. My mom left him when I was five because he wanted to be a " plig ".
Thank God she did.
But, having grown up inside, yet outside of it I have seen exactly what goes on. My grandfather was one of the last men in Utah sent to prison for polygamy.
1) The only arranged marriages I have ever been aware of are for the ugly spinster daughters who don't find a man through normal means. Then her dad will say to one of the other polygamists " hey, have you considered my daughter? "
2) One of the daughters of Warren Jeffs was at my dads house for thanksgiving last year. She had left Texas because she wanted a normal life. No goons dragged her back.
3) Religion is power and the Mormons are no different than other groups that have power; they don't like competing factions and so it is no surprise the propaganda machine is in full motion. One look at the vast business holdings and property purchases by the church reveals that it is a money making machine.
There are always going to be certain percentage of the population that likes diddling little children.
There is not a higher per capita rate amoungst the polygamist.
There may be a small percentage of people who are extremists as far as " normal " polygamist are concerned, probably about the same percentage of idiots who scream and protest and the funerals of soldiers.
The government has no business messing with these people. This country may be one of rule of law, but God expects man to follow his law. THEY, meaning the FDLS, believe they are following gods law and do not respect the main stream Mormons because they caved in to pressure by the federal government and make polygamy illegal.
Me? I think it is all idiocy; from fighting and arguing over what happens when we die, to the governments hairy hand smacking down citizens to the ignorant Mormons who haven't much clue about the history of their own religion and simply do and say as they are told. I was at the dedication of the West Jordan Temple, did the baptisim for the dead as a deacon in the church.
You almost have to move away from Utah to see how stupid it all is. All of it.
